This past week I had the pleasure to travel out to Washington State to photograph Jenny and Aaron’s wedding! I flew in on Wednesday along with my awesome team/entourage of Eric Kelley and Thomas Dalton who I want to thank for helping make everything a great success! The first couple of days we had the chance wander around Seattle and chill out before we went down to the Olympia and Tacoma area for the wedding. I will try to give more details about our experiences in Seattle in my next post, but for those of you who are dying to know: no, it wasn’t raining - it was actually quite nice, and yes, coffee is considered a food group there! :)

It was truly awesome to be a part of Jenny and Aaron’s wedding and experience it as more than just a photographer, but as a friend with a camera! I had the amazing opportunity to not only get to know Jenny and Aaron better, but also their family and friends who I look forward to staying in touch with and being life long friends! I am sad that everything went by so fast, but looking forward to sharing the pictures with everyone and hopefully returning soon!

The first pictures I want to share with you are from the Shot Spot (my version of a photobooth) which was a huge hit! There were so many great pictures that I put them into a little slideshow to show a quick glimpse of all the fun! Enjoy and stay tuned for some more awesome pictures from throughout Jenny and Aaron’s Wedding to come!

As you can tell from my lack of blog posting I have been busy! I will actually be out of town 3 out of the 4 weeks in July traveling to 4 different States! Tomorrow I will be heading to North Carolina, but before I go I wanted to take a moment to give you this update and share a few recent pictures (read to the end for an exciting announcement) …

For me the story of Erin and Dwayne starts many years ago … but to keep this long story short I will fast forward to almost a year ago. Erin’s brother, Kyle is one of my best friends, and at the time this story takes place I had the pleasure to attend and photograph his black belt test. During the intermission Erin informed me that she had been looking at my website for awhile and that I had to photograph her wedding! I was both honored, shocked, and very happy for Erin! Obviously I didn’t hesitate and months later I ended up in a field with grass up to my chest all around me. I guess this is a good time to introduce you to some pictures …

The Beautiful Erin:

The [insert adjective] Dwayne:

Recipe for these pictures:

Add 1 field of Tall Grass (optional)

and 1 Fun Couple

lastly throw in a spontaneous photographer (preferred brand: Aaron Watson)

Creates lots of fun and beautiful pictures

For spice add a little Fine Art

This is one of my personal favorites. Often I am inspired by other photographers and I sometimes like to mimic their look and/or style. Feel free to leave a comment guessing what iconic photographer inspired this one:

Nothing kills a nice moment like a cell phone. If you don’t want your fiancee to kill you leave it at home or turn it off.

Now I couldn’t leave you without a little tease from Erin and Dwayne’s wedding day at the beautiful Delfosse Vineyards! Erin had one of the most beautiful bouquets I have ever seen!

Why wait around when you could be having fun releasing the model within!

If you have made it this far congratulations! Look out for a brand new website and many more great pictures coming soon!!!

This past weekend was hot! Like heat index of 106 degrees hot! Perfect weather for a nice tan, swimming in the pool, and Ingrid & Aaron’s wedding! You may remember Ingrid & Aaron from our recent engagement session in New York (if not check it out), a truly awesome couple who first met in Law School at the University of Virginia. So for their wedding they returned to Charlottesville and had the most gorgeous wedding at the Clifton Inn!

Thanks to my awesome team (the amazing Erin Manfredi and Thomas Dalton!) we captured many great moments and beautiful pictures! Unfortunately, that has given me the impossible task of choosing a few of those pictures to share with you. … I just couldn’t choose a few though … so I choose over 130 and made a fun little slideshow.

Lastly, I love the song for the slideshow and found it to be very appropriate for Ingrid and Aaron’s story. I have provided an english translation for the lyrics below. Depending on your bandwith the slideshow may take a few minutes to load, so check them out while it’s loading. Enjoy!

Song: Ya Tu Veras (You’ll See)
Artist: Canvas

Lyrics (English Translation):

IT COULD BE THAT THE LOVE I HAVE INSIDE CAN FINALLY CONVINCE YOU THAT I’M YOURS AND YOU’RE MINE. COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT WITH THIS SONG I CAN FINALLY GET INSIDE YOU WITH EMOTION.
DON’T THINK ABOUT IT ANYMORE. LET THIS GREAT LOVE BE A BIG SURPRISE WITHOUT FEAR. DECIDE AND LET’S MAKE GOD AND DESTINY TALK ABOUT THE TWO OF US.

CHORUS:
YOU’LL SEE THAT THIS FRIENDSHIP IN TIME WILL TURN TO SOMETHING ELSE. YOU’LL SEE THAT YOU’LL FALL NATURALLY IN MY ARMS.

IT COULD BE POSSILE THAT MY FIERY PASSION ACHIEVES INVADING YOUR BODY MAKING AN EXPLOSION WHEN WE TOUCH EACH OTHER. IF YOU WANT LOVE. DON’T THINK ABOUT IT ANYMORE. LET THIS GREAT LOVE BE A BIG SURPRISE WITHOUT FEAR. DECIDE AND LET’S MAKE GOD AND DESTINY TALK ABOUT THE TWO OF US.

CHORUS
YOU’LL SEE THAT THIS FRIENDSHIP IN TIME WILL TURN TO SOMETHING ELSE. YOU’LL SEE THAT YOU’LL FALL NATURALLY IN MY ARMS.

These past few weeks have been a fun filled and crazy time. Wedding season is in high gear and this promises to be one of the best years ever! Over the past few weeks I have been happy to add a few new faces to the team and they already are kicking butt with amazing images and lending a hand with all of the miscellaneous details. Unfortunately, it hasn’t left me much time to update my blog, so I hope to reconcile that over the next few days with some pictures from a few great weddings and shoots I’ve had over the last few weeks!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to document Anne and Nick’s wedding at Ft. Meade in Maryland. The chapel at Ft. Meade was not only a very special place for Anne and Nick, but also Anne’s parents as that is where they got married! It was a truly amazing day as it had been raining all afternoon and then 10 minutes before I arrived the clouds parted and some of the most beautiful light filled the church!

I loved Anne’s little umbrella!

When I took this picture it reminded me of a painting, so I decided to have a little fun and make it into one. This is actually a very new service that we are offering and has become very popular for bridal portraits and looks especially stunning when printed out on a 16×20 canvas!

Anne had the most amazing smile all day and this moment has become one of my favorite pictures ever! The lighting was very surreal and I love how you can almost see Nick smiling in the silhouette

To continue from my previous post, the following day in New York City was something that I had been looking forward to for awhile! After a morning spent walking all over the city (probably over a 100 blocks in all), I met up with Ingrid and Aaron in Grand Central Station. I’ve wanted to shoot an engagement session in New York City for awhile as there are so many cool/artsy/unique settings and I finally found the perfect couple to do this with! One of the first things Ingrid told me about Aaron was that he loves photography and has a unique interest for camera bags (and latter I found out he loves to collect picture frames as well). So I knew right off the back this would be a perfect fit as they are both great looking, appreciate photography as I do, can be spontaneous and show their fun loving side! So to start off I had an idea in my head for quite awhile, and when Ingrid suggested meeting in Grand Central Station I new this would be the perfect place …

I love the concept that when your in love it sometimes feels like time stands still and everyone else becomes a blur around you. For just a moment your completely focused on one person with many feelings that you can’t explain and for that one moment it seems like nothing else matters. If you were to picture that moment I feel it would look something like this:

Then I thought about what the moment after would be and Ingrid & Aaron seemed to answer that question for me as they started to dance in the middle of Grand Central Station.

Of course it couldn’t last forever, so we headed to Central Park and had a little fun in the Subway on the way.

It definitely was not hard for them to show the love!

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing some fun dancing at their wedding in a few weeks!

When I saw this bridge I knew I was in for a treat! All of a sudden it felt like we were in Spain.

The art was amazing and I felt I would be amiss not keeping with the artsy theme. As you can see Aaron and Ingrid are not afraid of a little dipping action!

We then headed up to Ingrid’s friend’s rooftop for the most amazing view overlooking Central Park and the New York City skyline!

A little homage to Rose from the Titanic.

A little dramatic lighting for a dramatic sunset!

Then afterwards we met up with some of their friends for a little Chinese food!

… and later Aaron and I stayed up until almost 3:30 chatting about photography! I was truly a great day and I’m really looking forward to their wedding in a few weeks!

I’m back! As some of you may know I recently went on a 8 day road trip up and down the east coast to visit friends, family and clients. I had a blast and have a few pictures to share from the latter half of the trip. The first 4 days were spent in Baltimore and Boston, enjoying a few games and seeing family and friends I hadn’t seen in awhile. Then on Sunday the 18th I had the pleasure to attend my cousin Jake’s graduation from Connecticut College. Conn’s campus is truly beautiful and (for ACC fans) it felt like they mixed Duke’s Architecture with UVA’s famous Lawn to create the perfect collegiate atmosphere. After helping Jake move out of his dorm I drove down to NY City and found a great hotel located near Times Square where I walked around for a few hours doing the tourist thing … you know shooting a bunch of pictures and constantly looking up at the billboards while not watching where I was going. It was a ton of fun and thankfully I didn’t get run over by any taxis!

It was amazing that we found Jake in the hundreds of graduates, but even more amazing is that he saw us in the massive crowd of families.

This is one of my favorite moments from the whole day! Sam was looking on, proud of his brother graduating (maybe thinking that he will be doing the same in another year), and Amy gave him a big hug with a rush of emotions and feelings that only a mother could know.

Uncle Adam in all his jokester glory very proud that his son is finally finished accruing student loans.

From left to right: My grandfather Papa Lee, Uncle Adam, Cousin Jake, Grandma Nancy, Cousin Sam, Cousin Lauren

Sam sporting his retro look. I have a picture with my father in a very similar outfit at his own college graduation!

After a long day I was told I had to get a “slice” from Famous Ray’s Pizza by my good friend and a former New Yorker, Dennis Fryer. After checking in and relaxing for a second I found one directly across the street from my hotel. Let me just say it was amazing, thank you Dennis!

So a bit embarrassing, but I ended up walking the wrong way to what I thought was Times Square and instead ended up in Columbus Circle just outside Central Park. It turned out to be a nice area to sit while listening to the fountain and watch people passing. I also had some fun playing around with my fisheye lens on the Canon 5D…

I ended up finally finding Time Square thanks to my trusty iPhone, and grabbed some more fun pictures with my fisheye.

I loved this wall at the Hard Rock. You could view other Hard Rocks around the world on each TV (I think it was a live feed - anybody know?). You could also see some of the pins from each location too.

Last Friday I had the chance to relax a little and go see my good friend Eli Cook play at the Charlottesville Pavilion for Fridays After Five. I thought it would be fun to bring along my camera and get some cool shots of him and his band rocking it out! When I first got into professional photography back in high school he was one of the first people I ever shot, so I thought it would be fun to see the then and now. It’s funny, but I don’t see as much of a drastic change as I was expecting. Except maybe he looks more like a rock star now. :) If you haven’t heard him play definitely check him out, especially if you are a fan of blues guitar and hard rock! He is quickly becoming a renown guitarist and garnering much attention from many guitar magazines!

I took the first picture back when I started shooting digital (which I had a little fun “hand coloring” for a photography class assignment). Eli played solo for the Monticello High School talent show and easily ran away with first place! The rest of the pictures are from his show at Fridays After Five. I wanted each picture to take on a little more of that rock star persona, so with the little bit of free time I had this week I decided to give them a more artistic look (also why it took me a week to post). Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how you like them!

I’ve got to say I am very excited! Why, you ask … well there is no better way to start off this blog then with an amazing wedding and some awesome pictures! Elizabeth and Dan’s wedding this past Saturday was a culmination of all the right ingredients coming together. First, Elizabeth put an unbelievable amount of detailed and well thought out planning into everything with a little help from an amazing wedding planner and one of my new favorites, Colleen Cook of CCS Events (if you are getting married and thinking of hiring a wedding planner definitely check out Colleen, whether for your entire wedding or just the wedding day). Secondly, the weather forecast for most of the week called for rain and luckily it ended up being a gorgeous day! Third, Elizabeth and Dan have some of the nicest, most beautiful/handsome, and fun friends and family one could ask for! I could go on, but I don’t want to make you jealous!

Thank you guys for making me a part of your wedding! I can’t wait for everyone to see the pictures! Here are a few to tease you with:

I started off the day with Elizabeth and her beautiful bridesmaids while they were getting ready!

When I first met Elizabeth almost a year ago I was immediately struck by her beautiful smile and gorgeous eyes!

I loved their house and had fun with the ladies getting this relaxed portrait. Thank you ladies!

Although they were not supposed to give gifts, Dan gave Elizabeth these amazing Mikimoto Pearls for her to pass down in their family for generations to come. I knew I had to get a picture of them with her grandmother’s ring, which was passed down to Elizabeth.

Also, I must note that I was fortunate enough to have my good friend Eric Kelley helping me out. He is an amazing photographer and I was luck that he was available. While I was with the ladies he was photographing the guys getting ready and also had the task of driving my car around while I got to do such fun things as ride in the RV and on the Trolley! I couldn’t have done it without you bud, thanks!

Yes, I did say that I got to ride in an RV! After over a hundred weddings I am happy to say that I still have a few “Firsts” now and then. This was the first time I took an RV to a Church! As you can see below, the laides rocked it out as we were riding in the RV!

If you are wondering, Elizabeth and Dan were married at Hatcher Memorial baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia on May 3rd, 2008.

As you can see Elizabeth’s father was a very happy and proud parent!

They were glowing with excitement throughout the ceremony and had the biggest smiles immediately after the first kiss! In the background, Dan’s father had the honor of marrying the two.

We had fun in the Trolley on the way from the church to the Dominion Club. It was very hard to pick just one of the pictures from the trolley as there were so many great moments, but then again this is supposed to be a teaser. Look for the rest of the pictures in the Recent Events section in the next few weeks.

All of the time I am asked by perspective couples whether I do portraits/posed pictures within my photojournalistic style. I’m thnking to myself of course, don’t you see them on my website! Then I realize, my formals (as I like to call them), don’t look posed, stiff or forced instead they are very natural, so couples sometimes mistake them for photojournalistic pictures. Afterall, I generally don’t call them posed pictures anyway, as I never actually pose anyone. Instead I like to put people into a scene (usaully one where I can’t take a bad picture), and give direction for emotions and feelings instead of posing each person. It makes things much more natural, relaxed and overall provides a better picture. The pictures below I could not have posed, however by putting everyone in this beautiful location on the golf course (and with a little direction) we made a beautiful portrait!

We also had a little fun, can you tell?

Shooting on the golf course at the Dominion Club provided many beautiful scenes. I am so glad the weather turned out to be gorgeous, as it provided this amazing scene, and my favoite pictures of this year so far.

Inside the Dominion Club there are two levels (with the main ballroom on the lower floor) and a beautiful staircase that provided a lot of interesting and fun angles for pictures.

Beforehand Dan and Elizabeth told me they had been taking a few dancing lessons, which definetly paid off! Along with a little bit of improv, it made for a great first dance. Appropriately they danced to Son of a Preacher Man by Dina Carroll!

The Dominion Club in Richmond, Va is a gorgeous place to have a recption. Everyone there is great to work with, especially Jamie Ashenburg! Definetly give him a call if you are interested in having your event there. I hope to work there again in the near future!

I loved the cake (even though I didn’t get the chance to have a taste), and especially the nice touch of rose petals surrounding the base. The beautiful bouquets and floral arrangement were provided by JC Gourmet and More.

During the Father/Daughter dance I notticed both Dan and Elizabeth’s mother together and kept them in the corner of my eye. I am glad I did as I captured this amazing moment a few minutes later!

The evening provided some great dancing and fun moments, including this one with Dan pulling Elizabeth by an invisible rope!

Again Elizabeth proved to have impecable taste, as Eric Cunningham provided excellent music all night! The dancefloor was packed all night providing for some great moments. In the first picture (from left to right) this couple provided for some fun pictures all night, they could definetly dance! During Thriller (a Michael Jackson great and a must play for every wedding) the groomsman in the second picture turned into a Zombie. Lastly, another invisible rope made an appearance as guests had fun playing double dutch!

If you’re looking for a great DJ to provide great music and a great atmosphere for your wedding definetly check out Choice Entertainment and ask for Eric Cunningham! Another great person that I hope to have the pleasure to work with again in the future!

Lastly, a shoutout to two awesome couples Megan and Geoff (left) and Melissa and Mike (right)! I have the pleasure of photographing both of their weddings this coming Fall and next Spring! Look out for pictures from their upcoming engagement and bridal portrait sessions!
